Watering Restriction Reminders: Know Your District

Florida's five water management districts each set their own watering schedules, and restrictions can shift seasonally or during drought conditions. Which means customers (and sometimes contractors) get caught off guard. A quick refresher is worth sending out each season.

Generally, most districts limit residential irrigation to specific days based on address (odd/even house numbers) and restrict watering to early morning or evening hours to reduce evaporation loss. During declared water shortages, watering days can be reduced further, and some districts issue temporary emergency orders with tighter rules.

For contractors, this is a good moment to check that customers' controllers are actually programmed to match current local rules. A surprising number of systems are still running outdated schedules from move-in day. Offering a quick "compliance check" as part of a spring or summer service call is an easy value-add that also protects customers from potential fines.

Encourage customers to sign up for email alerts from their local water management district so schedule changes don't catch them off guard. A five-minute programming fix now can save an awkward conversation or a citation later.
