Steven King's career in the Landscape and Irrigation Industry spans more than 27 years. After earning his Associate of Science in Agronomy degree from Catawba Valley Technical College, Steven started his profession in the Golf and Landscape industries. His first two years in the Golf Course industry, after working as an assistant superintendent for Westinghouse properties and then as a superintendent for Gulf American Corp., Steven and his two brothers started King Landscaping and Sod of S.W.F. Inc. a full service landscape and irrigation contracting business in the southwest Florida area that specialized in custom residential and commercial projects.
Steven left the contracting business in 1998 and developed the first irrigation program in the country at Lake City Community College. During Steven’s time as a Professor, he sat on many committees’ which included the I.A.E.F. (Irrigation Association Educational Foundation) he contributed to the Florida Irrigation Society’s appendix F of the Florida Building Code. Started the first irrigation program in high school, helped start the first irrigation program in a minimum security youth offenders prison. In 2008, Steven moved from the educational field to establish his own consulting firm. BlueWater International, which is a consulting company providing sales-based consultation along with technical and sales development training for business and water use for all segments of the golf and landscape industries. Steven drafted the first C.I.S. (Certified Irrigation Specialist) certification for the country of the Bahamas. Steven has accepted the position as chairman for chapter relations for the F.I.S. and will also assist Mr. Kurt Thompson who chairs the educational committee.
Steven has been involved with the ‘First Tee’ in Memphis Tennessee, National Women’s Club in Jasper Florida, Habitat for Humanity and had volunteered for many local high schools and, youth organizations Steven has articles published in national magazines such as ‘Landscape & Irrigation’, ‘The PipeLine’ and helped co-author ’Teaching Landscape Irrigation Design to Non-Engineering College Students’ which has been accepted into ‘Applied Engineering in Agriculture and the quarterly journal of Agriculture Safety & Health and Biology Engineering.’ In addition, the irrigation management program was highlighted in the 20th Anniversary edition of the Irrigation Business & Technology publication while Lake City Community College received accolades as the first student chapter of the Irrigation Association.
With three national certifications from the Irrigation Association as a Certified Residential Irrigation Designer, Certified Irrigation Contractor, and Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor, Steven qualified as an EPA Water Sense Partner and earning the prestigious NISOD Excellence Award. (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) out of Austin Texas, which emphasizes the importance of teaching and leadership excellence in institutions of higher learning. On the home front, Steven was a finalist for FACC’s (Florida Association of Community Colleges) ‘Florida Educator of the year”.
